How a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Works

In this configuration. One fluid travels inside a set of tubes, while another fluid surrounds them inside an outer shell. Heat passes between the two fluids through the tube walls, allowing them to exchange temperatures without ever coming into direct contact. Baffles direct shell-side flow for maximum contact with the tube bundle.
